Be an INTEGRAL astronomer: Task 3

Be an INTEGRAL astronomer: Task 3

Twinkle, twinkle little star, astronomers wonder what you are. These sources vary strongly - but how?

Astronomical objects vary in different ways and on different timescales. The following objects are known to vary strongly: GX 5-1, GX 354-0, GX 1+4.

By examining the data for these objects from 2005 to 2009 what can you say about how they vary? (Hint: Do they vary in a regular way? Is there a pattern?)

Indicate how the X-ray emission of these sources compares to that from the Crab. (Hint: compare the average count rates for the sources and when the source is at its brightest how does it compare to the Crab?.)

Source name Source type Data
GX 5-1 X-ray binary Link to data
GX 354-0 X-ray binary Link to data
GX 1+4 X-ray binary pulsar Link to data
